Displaying Your Permit

Displaying your permit

Please follow these simple guidelines for displaying your permit in order to avoid receiving a citation and/or having your vehicle towed. If you use a shade screen, you may request a permit display pocket to place on driver’s side window.

Permits may only be displayed on registered vehicles. Permits that are issued as a physical hangtag must be clearly displayed at all times while you are parked on campus. Virtual permits, which do not have a physical hangtag issued, are valid through their license plate and must have it facing the drive lane while parked. A permit must be clearly displayed at all times while you are parked on campus.

License Plate Recognition

Don't be shy – show us your license plate

License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology will move into phase two of implementation at Bloomington. The LPR technology we are using has been reviewed and approved by the Indiana University Security Office.

Please be sure that you park your vehicle with the license plate facing the driving lane.

If you wish to continue backing into parking spaces or pulling through them and your state does not issue a front license plate, you must purchase an IU LPR plate and display it on the front bumper of your vehicle. IU LPR plates must be purchased in person at our office.

Parking hang tags are still required to be displayed unless the permit is issued only as a virtual permit. Permits are still needed to access gated parking garages. Virtual permit holders will use their CrimsonCard to access gated garages. All vehicles registered with the university must continue to display any issued hang tag to be validly parked. Virtual permits will not have an issued hangtag to display.

Hang-tag permits

Hang-tag permits should be suspended from the rearview mirror, with the letter and/or graphics showing through the front windshield and below the tinted portion of the windshield.

A free plastic pocket is available at the parking operations office. The pocket may be placed anywhere on the driver's side of the windshield where it is visible and does not block the driver's vision.

Sticker permits

Sticker permits, including temporary permits, should be placed in the center of your front windshield, behind your rearview mirror. The permit must be below the tinted portion of your windshield and out of your line of sight.

Remove the backing and attach the permit to your windshield. Do not use tape to secure the permit to your windshield.

Service permits

Display the service permit by hanging it over the interior rearview mirror so the permit faces out and can be read through the windshield. Vehicles must also display one of these permits:

EM-P
EM-S
CH
ST

Displaying a motorcycle permit

Place the permit on the front fork or fender of your motorcycle.

You must affix the permit so the serial number of the permit is plainly visible and in a vertical direction.

Plastic holders are available at the Parking Operations office to allow you to use your car hang tag on your motorcycle.

Avoid improperly displaying a permit

Your permit must be displayed as described above to avoid citations and/or the towing of your vehicle. You should never:

Use tape, magnets, string, or other materials to attach the permit to your vehicle
Hide a permit behind other hang tags on your rearview mirror. The shortest permit should always the one facing out the windshield.
