A carpool is defined as three, or more, IU employees who choose to drive together as their regular means of commuting from home to the Bloomington Campus.
Members of the carpool must register with Parking Operations (855-9848) in order to enjoy the privileges of a carpool parking permit. Carpool members will be assigned one carpool permit to share. All individual members of the carpool will also be issued an F permit which is valid only from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. in any non-24 hour A, C, or E space, including parking garages.
To be eligible to register a carpool and receive the program benefits, you must already be eligible to purchase an A or C parking permit. You must be an appointed IU employee, an associate instructor, graduate assistant, or research assistant. Hourly student employees are not eligible.
You may find your own carpool partners and fill out the Carpool Registration Form to register your carpool, or you may sign up as an individual using the Individual Carpool Application Form and we will attempt to match you with other interested individuals with similar commuting needs. Print out the form, complete it, and send it in to Parking Operations.
The carpool members may select a convenient parking lot or parking garage and Parking Operations will assign a specific reserved parking space for the exclusive use of the carpool members.
Parking Operations will arrange to split the cost of the carpool permit equally among the members and collect it through payroll deduction. The carpool permit will cost the same as a C permit ($105 in this academic year.) If the carpool dissolves for any reason during the year, you must inform Parking Operations within two weeks. The members are then free to purchase pro-rated parking permits through the normal procedures.
Members of the car pool are allowed to participate in the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program. The GRH program is intended for unpredictable or emergency trips, not for planned or regular events. The GRH program works like this:
Eligible types of emergencies covered by GRH include: personal illness, a family member’s illness, personal or family member emergency, unexpected overtime, the car pool driver had an emergency and stranded the others, or mechanical problems. It cannot be used to get to work, for weather related inconveniences, pre-planned appointments, or personal errands.
The service is available free of charge but can only be used on business days when the
commuter attends work.
The GRH program is only available on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Parking Operations will pay the taxi fare (not the tip) for only the first 50 miles. The commuter must pay for the additional miles above 50 if the trip exceeds the limit.
The service is limited to three occurrences during one semester and a total of six during the entire academic year. After three occurrences, the individual commuter is responsible for making and paying for his/her own transportation.
You may use the GRH program to ride home from work but you are limited to one
intermediate stop, such as at a child care center, your child’s school, or a doctor’s office.
It is not intended for shopping trips and/or personal business.
To activate the GRH program, call the Parking Enforcement Office at 855-9849 and give them your name and University ID number. The Parking Enforcement attendant will confirm whether or not you are eligible. If you are eligible, the attendant will assign you a voucher number, transfer your call to Yellow Cab, (339-9744) and authorize Yellow Cab to provide the trip.
The commuter can print a blank voucher off of the Transportation Services web page and complete the employee information on the form. You must include the voucher authorization number you got from Parking Enforcement and your University ID number. Give the form to the cab driver when he/she arrives.
You may share the ride with another passenger, but the other passenger must pay their own fare. If the other passenger is also eligible for the GRH program, they must obtain their own voucher and authorization number.
A voucher is only valid on the day it is issued.
One Day Permits
For trips of a predictable nature, such as medical appointments, hair cuts, or planned differences in your work schedule, you can use one-day parking permits.
Each member of the car pool will be issued ten one day parking permits per year.
You must write the current date on the permit with ink and place it in the windshield of your car or truck where the Parking Enforcement officers can easily see it.
